Schools can take advantage of the many valuable resources available through Safe Kids Canada to help educate students and parents about pedestrian and cyclist safety. See and download their pedestrian safety tip sheets at: www.safekidscanada.ca

The Neighbourhood Walkabout process is used by Active & Safe Routes to School to identify the specific transportation and safety issues at school sites and to prepare a plan of action to deal with the identified issues.

School Route

In conjunction with the Neighbourhood Walkabout, schools can survey parents and/or students to collect additional feedback and help to establish a project baseline. Sample surveys are provided here and can be modified to suit your school’s needs:

Morton Way’s 25 or Less Campaign

Despite the creativity of the staff and students to make walking to school easy and fun, Morton Way still feels there are too many vehicles dropping off students. They have implemented an innovative initiative to reduce this through a ’25 cars or less’ campaign. A ‘thermometer’ is displayed to alert drivers how many vehicles dropped off students the day before. School PA announcements update the students of progress. Signs are displayed around the school ’25 or less’. For details on this campaign, see:
